dupeGuru is free, open source, runs on three platforms, and does one thing Skimrr cannot: it finds duplicates that have been resized or rotated. If that is your problem, this page ends here and you should keep it.
What dupeGuru does well
It finds rotated and cropped copies
Its picture mode compares images in a way that survives rotation. Skimrr's fingerprint does not, so a rotated copy reads to it as a different photograph. This is a real gap on our side.
Free, and the source is there to read
Nothing to pay, nothing gated, and you can audit exactly what it does before letting it near your files.
macOS, Windows and Linux
Skimrr covers the first two. If your photographs live on a Linux machine, dupeGuru is one of very few real answers.
Where Skimrr is different
You look at photographs, not at a list
Results are shown as pictures at a size you can judge, grouped by day and openable full screen, with two frames comparable side by side under a shared zoom. dupeGuru presents rows of paths.
Camera raw and HEIC are first-class
Raw files are read through the rendition they embed, with EXIF orientation applied before anything is measured, so a portrait raw still matches its upright export.
Nothing is deleted without being seen, and nothing is final
The whole batch appears as a grid before a single file moves, and removals go to a local trash that restores in place.

Stay with dupeGuru if
rotated or cropped duplicates are what you are actually trying to remove, if you want to read the source before trusting a program with your pictures, or if you would simply rather pay nothing. All three are good reasons and none of them is a compromise.
Questions
- Is Skimrr open source?
- No. The licence pays for the work, and the privacy claim rests on the fact that the application makes no network request except licence activation, which anyone can verify with a firewall.
- Why pay for something dupeGuru does for free?
- For the review step, for camera raw read directly, for out-of-focus detection, and for removals that come back with one click. If none of those matter to you, dupeGuru is the better deal and this page will not pretend otherwise.
- Does Skimrr run on Linux?
- No. macOS 11 or later and Windows 10 or later.
