How to find blurry photos

Every library has them: the frame where the hand moved, the portrait focused on the wall behind. Here is what the tools you already have can do about it, how to find them by eye, and how to find them in one pass, on your own computer.

What your photo app can already do

Apple PhotosNo blur filter. Its Duplicates album, under Utilities, groups identical pictures, but a soft photo looks like any other.
Windows PhotosNo blur filter. You check each picture by eye.
Google PhotosSuggests blurry photos to delete when you manage your storage, but only for pictures already uploaded to Google.
Lightroom and Lightroom ClassicAssisted Culling sorts a shoot by subject focus, eye focus and eyes open. It needs an Adobe subscription, and the photos must be imported into the catalogue first.

Finding them by eye

Work one day at a time

Blurry frames come in clusters: a dim restaurant, a moving child, a long lens at dusk. Opening one day at a time finds them faster than scrolling the whole library.

Zoom to 100 % on what matters

At screen size almost everything looks sharp. Look at the eyes in a portrait, at text or edges in anything else. Blur that hides at 25 % is obvious at 100 %.

Compare a burst side by side

Four frames of the same moment differ only in detail. Put two next to each other at the same zoom and the sharp one stands out in seconds.

Do not judge the background

A soft background is often the point of a portrait. A photo is blurry when its subject is soft, not when everything behind it is.

Finding them in one pass with Skimrr

1. Download Skimrr and choose a folder

Free to download, scan and review, on macOS, Windows and Linux. The photos are read on your computer and nothing is uploaded.

2. Open the Bad Shot tab and pick Blur

Photos that missed focus are listed there. Closed eyes, underexposure and overexposure have their own filters, since one photo can have several problems.

3. Check, then move the ones you do not want

Open any of them at full size before deciding. Moving files needs a licence, and they go to a trash inside Skimrr, from which one click puts each back in its original folder.

Skimrr's Bad Shot tab, with filters for blur, closed eyes, underexposure and overexposure
The Bad Shot tab: Blur is the second filter, next to closed eyes and exposure. Nothing moves until you say so.

What makes blur hard to judge

A computer cannot see a photograph the way you do. Most tools measure how much fine detail each part of the picture holds, and a blurry photo holds less. The trouble is that a portrait with a soft background, a foggy landscape and a night street hold less detail too, without being failed shots. Skimrr handles this in two ways: only the sharpest parts of each photo count, so a sharp face in front of a soft background passes; and it measures how sharp the edges are rather than how many there are, by blurring the photo slightly once more and seeing how much its edges change. A crisp edge changes a lot, a soft one hardly at all. What it can still miss is a photo shaken sideways, whose edges along the movement stay crisp.

Questions

Why do blur detectors flag good portraits?
Most measure the sharpness of the whole picture, and a portrait with a soft background scores low even when the eyes are perfect. Skimrr only counts the sharpest part of the photo, so the subject decides.
Why does my night photo show up as blurry?
A dark scene holds less fine detail than a sunny one, so a tool that counts detail calls it soft. Skimrr measures how sharp the edges are instead, which does not depend on how much detail the scene holds: a night street in focus has edges as crisp as a sunny one.
Can a blurry photo be fixed?
Slightly soft ones, often: a sharpening slider or an AI sharpening tool can recover a little. Real motion blur or a missed focus rarely comes back convincingly. Skimrr does not edit photos; it finds them so you can decide.
Is finding blurry photos free in Skimrr?
Yes. Scanning a folder and reviewing every flagged photo is free, with no time limit. A licence ($19.99 once, up to five devices) is needed only to move files.
Does it work on camera raw files?
Yes. ARW, CR2, CR3, NEF, ORF, RW2, RAF and DNG are read directly, alongside JPEG and HEIC.
Does Skimrr delete anything?
No. Photos you remove go to a trash inside Skimrr and can be put back one by one. Only emptying that trash deletes them.
